Usage Limits Guide
Claude Max multiplies Claude Pro's allowance: 5x for $100/mo or 20x for $200/mo, per rolling 5-hour session, with weekly caps on top. Against Anthropic's ~45-message Pro baseline that works out to roughly 225 or 900 messages per session — our arithmetic, not a published number. Max is also the only subscription tier that includes Claude Fable 5.1, up to 50% of your weekly limits.

Anthropic's Pro guidance is ~45 messages per rolling 5-hour window, so Max works out to roughly 225 (5x, $100/mo) or 900 (20x, $200/mo) messages per session — a derived estimate, since Anthropic publishes the multiplier, not a count. Weekly caps still apply on top.
Yes — the only subscription tier that does. Since September 1, 2026, Max includes Fable 5.1 up to 50% of your weekly limits; beyond that it runs on pay-as-you-go credits. On Pro, Fable 5.1 is credits-only from the first message.
For interactive work and Claude Code, usually yes — $100–200 flat beats metered API bills for daily heavy use. If you're automating (scripts, agents, CI), the API is the right tool, and at very high volume its prompt caching makes it cheaper than Max 20x.
Yes. One pool covers both, on the same 5-hour and weekly meters. That's precisely what Max is for — Pro users who hit weekly caps almost always got there through Claude Code.
Start at 5x. It's one-fifth the usage of 20x on paper but in practice clears the weekly wall for everyone except full-time agentic-coding workloads. Upgrade only after you've actually hit the 5x weekly cap.
