Usage Limits Guide

Claude Pro Limits: What You Actually Get for $20

Anthropic$20/mo ($17/mo billed annually)Verified September 2, 2026

Quick answer

Claude Pro gives you roughly 45 messages per rolling 5-hour session — Anthropic's own wording is "around 45 messages every 5 hours, often more depending on capacity" — plus separate weekly limits that reset on their own schedule. Both pools are shared between claude.ai chat and Claude Code. There is no fixed daily number: usage is measured in compute, so long conversations, big attachments, and heavier models drain it faster.

How the limits actually work

  • Two meters run at once: a rolling 5-hour session window and a weekly cap. Hitting either one stops you until it resets.
  • The 5-hour window opens with your first message and resets about five hours later — not at fixed clock times.
  • Weekly limits track Opus-class usage separately from everything else, each with its own reset shown in Settings → Usage.
  • claude.ai chat and Claude Code draw from the same allowance. A heavy Claude Code session eats your chat budget too.
  • Consumption is compute-based, not message-count-based: a short question in a fresh chat costs a fraction of a long prompt with files at the end of a 100-message conversation.

Which models you get

Claude Sonnet 5

Default model — the most usage per dollar on Pro

Claude Opus 5

Included, but draws from the separately-tracked Opus-class weekly bucket

Claude Haiku 4.5

Included — the lightest drain on your limits

Claude Fable 5.1

NOT included in Pro limits — usable only via pay-as-you-go credits (since Sep 1, 2026)

Claude Fable 5

Same rule as Fable 5.1: credits only on Pro

How these limits have changed

August 28, 2025

Anthropic adds weekly limits on top of the 5-hour session window, citing a small share of users running Claude Code around the clock.

May 6, 2026

5-hour session limits doubled for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise; weekday peak-hour reductions removed.

June 9, 2026

Claude Fable 5 launches and is briefly free for all users (until June 22); afterwards it sits outside Pro's included limits.

September 1, 2026

Claude Fable 5.1 launches. On Pro it runs only on pay-as-you-go credits; Max plans include it up to 50% of weekly limits.

Getting the most out of the limits

  • Start a new conversation for a new topic. Claude re-reads the entire chat on every message, so a long-running thread can cost 10x what fresh chats would.
  • Keep Sonnet 5 as your daily driver and save Opus 5 for the tasks that need it — the Opus weekly bucket is the one heavy users hit first.
  • Big attachments count every message, not once. Extract the pages you need instead of re-sending a 200-page PDF.
  • Check Settings → Usage before a long session — it shows both meters and their exact reset times.
  • If you hit weekly caps on Claude Code more than occasionally, the $100 Max 5x tier is priced almost exactly at the crossover point.

FAQ

How many messages do you get with Claude Pro?

Anthropic's published guidance is around 45 messages per rolling 5-hour session, "often more depending on capacity." There is no fixed daily total — a separate weekly cap also applies, and both are measured in compute, so message length, attachments, and model choice change the real number substantially.

Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?

Yes. Claude Code is included on Pro and draws from the same 5-hour and weekly limits as claude.ai chat. Its 5-hour session limits were doubled on May 6, 2026, and peak-hour reductions were removed at the same time.

Can I use Claude Fable 5.1 on Claude Pro?

Not within the subscription's included limits. Since its September 1, 2026 launch, Fable 5.1 on Pro runs only on pay-as-you-go credits billed separately. Max subscribers get it included up to 50% of their weekly limits.

Why did I hit my limit after far fewer than 45 messages?

Because limits are compute-based. A long conversation is reprocessed in full on every new message, so message 60 of a thread can cost many times message 1. Large file attachments and Opus-class models drain the allowance faster too. Starting fresh chats is the single biggest fix.

When do Claude Pro limits reset?

The session window resets roughly five hours after the first message that opened it. Weekly limits reset on their own schedule — Settings → Usage shows the exact date and time for each bucket.

Is Claude Pro enough, or do I need Max?

Pro comfortably covers a few hours of chat plus light Claude Code use per day. If you hit the weekly cap more than once a month — usually via Claude Code — Max 5x at $100/mo is the intended next step, with 5x the usage and Fable 5.1 included up to half its weekly limits.
